Gideon Lichfield is based in New York City as The Economist's media editor. He writes about the film, music and television industries, the news media, and publishing, as well as the effects of technology on society, with a global remit. He has worked at the paper since 1996, as a science correspondent in London; bureau chief in Mexico City, Moscow and Jerusalem; and deputy digital editor, in New York, working on online innovation and strategy.
In addition, Gideon was editorial director of The Economist Film Project, a partnership with PBS NewsHour that ran during 2011 to encourage high-quality documentary film-making, and was the founding editorial director of Economist Education, a new e-learning business that launched in 2011. He also co-edits Johnson, The Economist's language blog. Gideon has taught foreign reporting in the graduate programme at NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, and has extensive experience giving radio and television interviews in various languages.
